How it works

A quick run-through of the workflow — simple, practical, mobile-first.

1. Open the portal and choose what to do

When you open the coc.nz portal, you start by choosing what you want to do — either create a new certificate or open a saved draft to continue editing. Every time you start a certificate, a draft copy is automatically created and stored under your account for you to return to later.

2. Choose your certificate type

Select the certificate that matches the work you carried out — Certificate of Compliance (COC), Electrical Safety Certificate (ESC), or Record of Inspection (ROI). This step defines what kind of certificate will be produced at the end.

3. Select the installation phase

Choose whether the job is 1-phase, 2-phase, or 3-phase. This filters out any unnecessary tests for that installation type (for example, single-phase won’t show 3-phase options).

4. Step through the testing pages

Once setup is complete, the portal walks you through a sequence of common testing pages — insulation resistance, polarity, earth fault loop impedance, RCD testing, and so on. This layout helps prompt you to think through each of the common tests, and to consider others that may not be part of the sequence.

Users are strongly encouraged to have access to, and understand, AS/NZS 3000 and any standards it references. coc.nz does not assess or validate any test results or values entered — the responsibility for determining whether a test passes, fails, or is performed rests entirely with the qualified licence holder. If you need to record an extra test that isn’t currently included, use the Extra Tests page and/or contact us so we can consider adding that test page.

5. Pick and record what’s relevant

Record as much or as little as applies to the job. If a test doesn’t apply, skip it. If only part of a test applies, record just that portion — for example, a phase-only insulation test while leaving neutral or earth blank.

The system allows partial entries — no problem, whatever you want to do, you can. Value fields accept numbers only to bring up the number pad on mobile, and we automatically add a zero before the decimal (so “.3” becomes “0.3”) to keep things tidy. Only the entered test results are printed on the certificate.

6. Everything auto-saves

Your progress saves automatically every time you move between pages. The platform handles phone interruptions and other distractions quite well, but we recommend pressing "next" after completing each page to make sure your current entries are saved.

7. Sign and finish

When all required details have been entered, sign directly on the screen to complete the certificate. After signing, generate the certificate — it should download automatically (depending on your browser settings) and also email a copy to the preset email address. If you’re not ready to finalise, just press Home and return to it later.

8. How results are included in the certificate

All test results you enter are attached to the end of the certificate as a clearly presented list — one test result set per line. Only the results you’ve entered are included during certificate generation. Anything left blank or skipped is simply not shown, keeping the final document clear and focused.
